The Lighthouse

July - November 2020

Governors Island, NY

I’ve wanted to spend time making art on Governors Island since I first visited in 2016. In January 2020 I submitted a proposal to establish a satellite Beam Center on the island we would host a summer residency and satellite fabrication lab for teens. The proposal was accepted, however, due to covid was amended. In July we opened the Lighthouse as an artist-residency for adult artists across NYC who needed space to work and were interested in youth mentorship.

As the founder of the project, I performed the role of Lighthouse Keeper, spending much of my time working on my own installation, storytelling, and folkcraft art practice. 8 artists worked in the space throughout the summer and engaged in mentorship conversations with youth.

In collaboration with other organizations on the island I co-organized, Hey Neighbor!, an intimate Zoom-based series of conversations between 12 pairs of artists on our porch.
