Fractal Mycology - Spring/Summer 2019
How can working with fungi make us better humans and connected communities?
A collaboration with mycologist Craig Trester and 20 high school students from across New York City; together we researched relationships between humans and mushrooms, the internet and underground mycological ecosystems, how to grow and cook fungi, and introduced more than 600 children across NYC to My Pet Mycelia, an oyster mushroom that is always looking for new homes and cardboard boxes to consume.
All the while, mycelium became a metaphor for our collective relationship as artists & learners.
Students fabricated and wired lab equipment for inoculation, coded Raspberry Pi to automate fruiting chambers, developed their own Fractal Mycology merch, and STEAM projects for kids.
Their presentation at NY Public Library won them a crowd favorite award.
